Nightmares and a new book
Thursday April 16, 2009
I've got the proofs for my new book back, and it’s only two weeks until the Sydney Mind Body Spirit Festival begins, and I launch the new book, A Magical Journey: Your Diary of Inspiration, Adventure and Transformation. There are heaps of free seminars, on witchcraft, psychic ability, crystals, animal dreaming and life coaching, amongst many other things, you can do a free yoga class, go shopping, book a psychic session or listen to myriad speakers... To find out more, visit the MBS Festival site.
Last night I had a nightmare about the festival – that the book wasn’t ready, I hadn’t made any posters or got any change organised, my stall was a mess, it was total chaos. Which is the beauty of nightmares. They help you work through your fears and work out the best way to deal with a situation. I woke up and got busy designing posters and sorting out all the little details so I won’t have to worry... Here’s a breakout about nightmares that I wrote for a story on dreams a while back...
Nightmares – night time’s little helpers...
Everyone’s has a nightmare, where you are so frightened, and so convinced it’s real, that you wake up shaking, heart thumping, terrified to close your eyes again. The word nightmare comes from a medieval term, as mare meant demons. It is something that agitates you so much in your dream state that it either wakes you up or forms an imprint.
‘It’s usually due to an emotional issue that you need to deal with. It boils down to either fear, frustration, anger, those basic emotions are locked inside you,’ dream expert Leon Nacson explains.
‘We remember things on the cellular level, and we need to release those emotions out of our system. If you ate 10 chocolate bars, you’d hope you had an elimination system to get rid of them, because you don’t want that much sugar and fat in your body.
‘You’ve got the same facility for a negative, unempowering or limiting thought – and that system is nightmares.’
By playing out your biggest fear in your dreams, you are able to find solutions to the problem or release the tension around it for when you have to face the situation in real life.
Before a big movie, Oscar winning director Ron Howard dreams that he doesn’t know which end of the lens to look down, because his worst fear is not being able to direct a movie.
‘You live out your worst fear in your dream state, and you eventually overcome it. It’s your way of facing the fear, overcoming the fear and dealing with the fear, to get it out of your system,’ Leon says.
‘If you keep having the same nightmare over and over again it’s a very deep fear, and you should deal with it. Either face it or go to a health professional or get someone who can help you face it, because it won’t go away until you do deal with it. It can get to the point where it becomes bioacidic in your body and predisposes you to all sorts of imbalances and illnesses.’
So they’re actually good?
‘They are your best friend. Nightmares alert you to a problem. It’s like saying these road signs with flashing lights that go danger danger are bad – they alert you to the cliff or the mudslide around the corner. Don’t ignore them, actually delve into it, and emerge stronger and more in control of your life.’
