The other day I took a big box of children’s books and magazines over to the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation in Sydney, and today I made a donation and started a page on the Wall of Hands to try to raise a little money to help them with their important work. You can check it out here. They have lots of different kinds of programs you can contribute to, from donating money to donating your time or donating new or second-hand books as part of their Share-A-Book program, which provides children’s or teen books and magazines to Indigenous, refugee and marginalised communities in need of resources.
ALNF teaches marginalised Australians how to read and write. It also supports a broad range of individuals (teachers, carers, healthcare workers, community workers, volunteers) in building on their skills to develop good literacy practices in their families and communities. They have programs that work on the revival and maintenance of Indigenous First Languages through the conversion of oral languages into literacy resources and teaching/learning strategies, one that assists young refugees make a successful transition into Australian schooling, amongst many others. ALNF believes that literacy and numeracy skills are a critical element in enabling all people to fulfil their dreams. Without these skills individuals, families and whole communities are powerless in realising their full potential.
