Happy New Year!
Friday January 1, 2010
Although we invented the western calendar, and have changed it a few times to suit ourselves, so there is no actual magic to this day – indeed, in other cultures this day is the same as any other day – the start of a new year always makes me reflective, and happy, and fills me with a sense of the immense potential and light we all have. We can metaphorically turn a page, and start again, let go of perceived failures and begin with a clean slate (and all those other lovely cliches!). And of course days have power and magic because of the power we give them, and so now, in the western world, New Year's Day is a time of joyous celebration.
Today too, in this part of the world, it is the full moon, the perfect time to manifest abundance and fulfill all your dreams. Elsewhere though last night was the full moon – and a blue moon at that. This isn't a northern vs southern hemisphere thing though, like the seasons, it's a longitudinal thing, with the full moon occuring based on your time zone. Australia and New Zealand, and Japan, had their full moon today, while Africa, Europe and the Americas had theirs last night. And so, really, the blue moon doesn't mean all that much either, since the months we use are totally man-made, our way of marking time. The moon becomes full every 29.5 days, so whether that happens twice in December, as happened in most places in the world, or twice in January, as us in Australia and our neighbouring countries will experience, means little to the moon itself :-)
